Safety is changing for the better in Kayaking

Kayaking River Safety Rescue training for everyone.

The Training and Development unit (TDU) is the part of Canoeing Ireland that is responsible for the development and progression of Instructor and personal skills certification for Kayaking and Canoeing in Ireland.

Over the past 2 years they have been working towards a goal to make the Instructor and personal skills qualifications more modular and up to date. Out of this has come the redevelopment of the RSR courses from 2 levels to 3 levels. This has the effect of making the content of them more up to date for kayaking and using real life scenarios that happen regularly as the teaching focus.

So what good is this to you? Well the new course will help you practice the skills you need to be a safe and competent member of a group of paddlers and give you the confidence to get involved in rescue situations and use your skills.
  • Get more confident with throw ropes
  • Learn about the Hydrology of the river and how to use it to your advantage
  • Learn about Safety Zones and Leadership
  • Systematic approaches to rescue
  • How to prevent rescue situations in the first place
  • Knots and anchors
  • Vector pulls and extraction techniques
  • How to keep your head and ensure everyone is safe
All of the above things are taught in the 3 RSR courses along with a lot more practical ideas and techniques.

If you do one thing to improve your paddling this year Safety and Rescue should be at the top of your priority list.

These courses can be run at anytime to suit your group and we will also have courses running for individuals throughout the winter.
