Whitewater Canoeing If canoeing with your spouse, partner, family member or friend through moderate rapids in a classic 16-foot-plus river-running canoe is your goal, our tandem canoeing course will fit your whitewater canoeing needs. We begin on flatwater teaching basic canoe strokes and canoeing maneuvers from the bow and the stern. After establishing your comfort with the fundamentals of canoe paddling, we transition to moving water where we combine these basic canoe skills with river reading and basic whitewater maneuvers. With a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication in a tandem canoe, these courses are ideal for a safe fun introduction to the world of open boating. Goal of the clinic To introduce the sport of tandem whitewater canoeing and teach the basic techniques for safe paddling on moderate rivers. Who should take the course To take this course you should be in reasonable physical condition, be comfortable in the water, and have an interest in paddling. Our minimum age for this course is 14 What will be covered After introducing the sport and the equipment, we will get our first taste of the boats in the security of a canal where we can practice exiting and leaning the canoe and learn the basic strokes, including sweep strokes, forward strokes, draws, and braces. Once people are comfortable in the boats, we head to moving water where we introduce river maneuvers such as the break in, break out, and ferry gliding. On the second day we continue to work on river maneuvers, and we end by running a several-mile-long, grade II section of river. Equipment All equipment is provided. i.e. Canoe, Paddle, Bouyancy aid, Helmet. |
